Veronica's Baptism...

Things are still goin' well over here. we had a supa elect person we found on base and he is getting transferred to California so that was disappointing, but we passed on the referral to the elders in Cali and they should get an easy baptism from it.  He isn't going to Camp Pendleton in Matt's mission, it is the Redland Mission.

Haha fun story, the j3 elders got robbed at gunpoint so we had to help them get police reports and such figured out and they had to go identify the guy in the middle of the night. It was pretty crazy.

Here are some of the pics from the baptism; turns out Friday the 13th is lucky after all! We had a nice service.

Military Base Sacrament Services...

Hey Fam!

Friday the 13th veronica will be getting baptized! We're excited for it.

We go to the military base and do sacrament services there on Sundays, there were some nonmembers who came who are really interested so we have started teaching them. We've been having lots of success working with the part memeber families around here.  The sound lead to more baptisms in the future!

Love yall!

Ospreys and Cobras...

Hey Fam,

This week went well, went on exchange with President James and had a grand ole time. Not much new this week, continuing to find and Veronica should be good for her baptism on the 13th. We should hopefully be getting more people on date soon. Here are some pics of us on the flight line. We also got to get in Ospreys and Cobras!

Focused on Missionary Work...

Hey, this week went well! Veronica and her family came to church and is progressing well toward her date.  The  bishop came on splits with us and we had a great time with him, he is very focused on missionary work and improving it, which is awesome to see.  Since this is a military ward there are tons of prospective elders who their parents transfer their records in but they don't want to come to church. Like 226 of them, so we are working on contacting them and getting them active then baptizing their friends; that's our goal. We are going to the beach for p-day today and going to the flight deck for Lejeune so that will be a good time! I will send pics love y'all!

I Love Jacksonville...

Hey Fam!

This week was great I love Jacksonville.  It's a military town so there are lots of young marines here that we teach, My companion is Elder Baird, he is from Fremont, Utah, he loves basketball and is a sporty guy overall. We've served around each other before and we get along great he is a solid missionary. We had a killer week this last week found lots of solid people; the ones we put on date are, Veronica and Bruce. Veronica's husband is a convert but lost touch with the church two years ago, we found them street contacting, she will be getting baptized on October 13th, her husbands birthday. When went to teach them the second time their uncle was there and we challenged him to be baptized the same day. I will let you know about everyone else as they progress. There are lots of part member families that we will be working with as well.

We have a pretty big district, two senior couples, the Browns and the Scotts, Elder Hancock (who was my comp in the chapel Hill area when we found Al), and Elder Larsen who are in Wallace.  Other Elders are Fraughton and Whitmer.  The Sisters are Sisters Smith, George, Weaver and Coburn.

Love y'all and hope things are going well.

Al got baptized...

Well, this was another great week, I have tons of pictures for y'all to make up for the lack of pictures I've sent.  Do y'all remember Al, way back in the Chapel Hill days?  He just got Baptized!  There is a picture attached with the current missionaries who baptized him up in Chapel Hill.  Also some investigators we found in Fuquary and taught a bit, but referred over the the Spanish missionaries will be getting baptized this coming week so, over all, things have been going super well.  I'm getting transferred to Jacksonville 2nd Ward and I am so excited, I will be moving from ZL to DL, but I'm so excited for this assignment.  President told me Jacksonville used to be the highest baptizing district in the mission and it hit the poops recently, but he asked me to put it back on top, so I am really excited for this opportunity.  This will be my last area and it will be a great place to die.

Love y'all and hope things are well at home!

Hey Mom,

Things have been going super well, I sent out the group email, but to answer some of your questions, being ZL was great, it was so awesome to boast a bit about the Tri Lake Zone.  While we were there we moved from last place in baptisms to second.

Stacy Got Baptized...

Hey Mom!

This last week was great!  Stacy down in Sanford got baptized, I have a picture of her and her son.  It was a sweet experience and her father was able to come as well.

It's crazy to think that Matt is in California, and once he is done with training I will be almost ready to go home.  Do we have any details on his new comp?  Where he is from, how long he has been out etc.?  And I remember Temecula, Dad and I went and watched Enders Game down there together!

Hope things go well with the house hunting.  For P-day we went to Raven Rock State Park, and it was super fun.  One of the best P-day activities.  I will send some pics.  Love ya!

Zone Conference this week...

Hey Mom!

This week was good and we did have a Zone Conference this week and Mission Leadership Council, so we were doing some preparing for that.  Zone Conference went well, we instructed on using the Book of Mormon in conversion and drew on the talks "What Think Ye of the Book of Mormon?", "Safety for the Soul", and Hugh Nibley's parable about Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon.  The central message was that you cannot testify with converting power unless you yourself have been converted by the Book of Mormon.  It went well.  Things have been going very well.

Elder Hawks Goes Home...

Elder Hawks goes home tomorrow.  As far as how things have been gong here, we have an investigator named Maddie.   She's in her thirties, we found her tracting, she is friends with a lot of Mormons in Apex.  She's probably our most solid investigator,  We have yet to meet her husband, but we met all of her kids.  They're a great family.

Andrew, he is a king and ruler...owns several businesses; he asked a Mormon friend for a blessing and he invited us to come and give the blessing.  We talked about the priesthood and what gave us the authority to do this and invited him to take the discussions and he accepted.  My new comp will be Elder McKonkie, yes he is related to Bruce.  He's awesome and I'm super excited to be with him.

Solid People...

Hey Mom,

Things here have been well, we weren't left with a whole lot to go on in the area we came in, but things are starting to pick up, we've really hit the members hard with how they can invite their friends.  Fuquay has some wealthier areas so tracting is less effective, but we've found some really solid people on our own efforts and from members so things have been going well.  Elder Hawks isn't too trunk either so that will be good!

Baptism went through...

Hey Mom,

The baptism went through, it was a great experience, the ward helped out a ton which was great.  Usually they leave most up to the missionaries, but they are actually on top of things which is nice.  Here is a picture, there should be more on the way.  We had tons of exchanges this week and we have a bunch next week as well.  Exchanges for days!  That's what we do.

Zone Leader...

So Transfers!

Crazy things are going down.  There were seven zones, but due to a loss of missionaries in the mission they are down sizing to 5 zones, mix-matching and making new ones.  President asked if Elder Hawks and I would be the zone leaders over one of the new zones they are creating.  it will be a fun new experience.  New area is Fuquay-Varina, Tri-Lake Zone!  More information next week!

Zoo in Sanford...

Hey Mom,

So it works out, we changed our p-day today.  There was a zoo in Sanford that we wanted to to to as a district, but it isn't opened on Monday so we got permission to change our p-day to today wo we could go.  We just got back and it's a nice little zoo, nothing spectacular, but it was fun to of and see.  They had a giraffe you could feed.  I put a carrot in my mouth and the giraffe ate it our of my mouth.  It was fun.  And, for my birthday, haha, I don't know if its too late for requests or anything, but there is a board game called King of Tokyo that I played out here on a p-day and it's super fun, it would be a good p-day activity.  This week was good, Derek and Scott came to Church.  Transfers are coming up this week, we get the news on Saturday.  I'm 90% sure I'm leaving, but we will see!

Love ya mom, thanks for all you do!

Miracle this week...

Hey Mom,

We have to go to Fayetteville today so I don't have a lot of time, again pics today, sorry.  Derricks baptism didn't go through , I will keep you posted on how he's doing.  But we did have a miracle this week.  There was someone that Elder Qaio and I contacted two months ago, it was just your usual door contact.  We invited her to church and gave her a card but she wasn't interested in speaking to us, but she randomly showed up at church yesterday and wants to learn more.  The never happens, but we are so grateful it did!

Love Y'all!

Church computer virus...

Hey so no pictures today, the library is closed and there is a virus on the church computer which will destroy all cameras, no joke.  Many learned the hard way.  So the baptism may be pushed back, we will find out later today, hopefully it will go through.  Elder Arveseth and i get along, he's different from me but we get along together.

Stake Conference this week...

Oh well, no pictures today.  We haven't gotten the charger yet, sorry.  We had stake conference this week in Fayetteville which was great, but since it's so far away nobody was able to come to church.  Derek will be getting baptized on June 3rd, so that is exciting, we will just need to keep working with his brothers and everything.  One thing that has been frustrating though is the ward isn't receiving them as well as they should, and the ward counsel never meets so it's been difficult to properly address the situation.  Our other investigators are doing good as well.  Richard is on date for baptism on the 17th and Tracy is continuing to progress as well.  I don't know what type of calling I will receive in the future, but thanks to many of the good (and bad) examples) I have seen I know how I would want to go about doing them.  And that made me chuckle when you told me it took an army to keep Grandma Shields down!  Glad to hear things are going well and that is a bummer about Matt's foot.  How long will he be wearing the boot?

Love Y'all and hope things go well!

Cameron Baptism and Transfers...

So transfers, I will be staying and Elder Qiao will be heading out, don't know who will be coming, but I will have  a new companion tomorrow.  This week has been pretty good, Darrel came to church. Derek wasn't able to make it but we will be seeing them again next week.  Our other investigators are doing well.  I will be able to give you a more detailed thing next week.  But, I do have some pictures to send, just one moment!

Member Missionary Work...

Hey Mom,

That's crazy to hear about Alex!  England will be perfect for him!  And good for Reuel too, there will be a lot of missionaries out when I get home.  No pictures this week, but I will try and get some sent this coming week.  Derek was able to come to church but his brother wasn't.  But we were able to have some else there thanks to the Stake President.  We had ward conference and while the Stake President was driving over, he picks up a man who he saw was struggling on the side of the road.  The man (Kevin) just so happened to have a white shirt and tie in the bag he was carrying and he came to church with us.  We taught him the restoration in the second hour with Brother Nance, who is the High Counselor over missionary work in the stake.  It was a miracle, and a great example of member missionary work to a ward who hasn't had a member generated lesson in several months.  I have been reading The Power of Everyday Missionaries recently, and we have been sharing some of the stories of it.  Just think how fast the kingdom would grow if every year, every member of the church had one person taught by the missionaries in their home.

Love Elder Shields!

Uneventful Week...

Hey Mom,

I just sent Matt a short email on my thoughts about the temple, and I will be better at sending pictures, there may be some you can steal from the NCRM facebook page.  With Matt Wilcox coming home that leaves only me who is still out in the mission feild...Crazy how are Spencer and Amy doing? He popping the question soon? This week was pretty uneventful unfortunately weren't able to find any real solid people, and due to a miscommunication Darrel and Derek weren't able to come to church this week.  We will recover and have a great week this week.

Matt's Call...

Hey Mom,

Things have been going well!  So excited to hear about Matt's call, so exciting!  I'm so happy for him!  We had a great week this week, our investigators Derek and Darrel came to church, they have a baptismal date for May 13th.  Cameron is the name of the kid in Pembroke.  Speaking of Pembroke, Momma Ang says hey.  haha and with Scott, barfing stories should be expected.  Yes I got the package, by the way, thanks for that, I always love the stroopwaffles.

Love ya and hope things are going well back home!

Last Sunday in Pembroke...

Hello Sister Shields.  This is a picture I took with Elder Shields the Sunday before he was transferred from Pembroke.  Sure hated to see him leave.  But I know they are to go and share the gospel with others that are seeking a change in their lives.  Your son is a wonderful young man.  I truly miss him. He told me that a good friend of his served here also, Kenyon James, and they were on the wrestling team together.  It was awesome to know that Heavenly Father sent me two amazing young men.  By the way my name is Angila, also known as Mama Ang.  Elder Shields asked me to send this picture to you.  Have an amazing Easter Sunday and weekend.  The Atonement is so amazing, we get to live with our Heavenly Father once again.

You know how moms are...

That's weird to think Spencer and Amy, you will have to send me his email so I can give him a hard time about it.  And the date got moved back to the 29th, it will still be happening but his mother thought the 8th was too soon, you know how moms are.  It was funny because the conversation we had with our investigator was as follows.  He was nervous about baptism because he didn't fully understand why baptism was necessary and what it meant.  We explained it.  I asked if that all made sense and if he had any questions, and he said, "Yea, when can I get baptized?"  I said, "That is an excellent question, when do you want to get baptized?"  He said, "Hmmm, like two or three weeks."  I said, "We can make that happen."  But then mom.  That's fine, all is well in zion, but I'm excited to hear where Matt gets called.  I will get the outline sent!

Love y'all!

Sanford and Qiao

Hey Mom,

So Sanford is a wonderful area, haha, nobody else thinks so, but after Pembroke, everywhere is great!  Pembroke is probably the most depressing place I've ever been and I learned to find joy there and appreciate the good things, but there's a lot more good in Sanford.  Elder Qiao is awesome, he is a great missionary, and his English is pretty good.  He has no trouble teaching and getting his point across, the only thing he really struggles with is a limited vocabulary.

That's great to hear that UNC is in the finals, I hope they can pull it off.

There is actually a deaf family that we are teaching, so let Sam hear that, it definitely makes me wish I had stuck with ASL more than I did but we had some good interpreters.  They will get baptized eventually, they just want to know more.  There are a lot of good people we are teaching now, I'm still trying to get to know them better, but the previous Elders did a great work, I'm glad I don't have to clean up another area.

Also, something cool with General Conference; I have to give instruction for a zone meeting, and the subject I was wanting to address people on is receiving power through the grace of Christ, and through living our covenants and especially living the law of consecration, there were so many powerful talks about that subject, receiving power and giving our all.  Overcoming the world.  I will have to send my outline home, it was pretty amazing to see how many things that were included in my outline that were addressed in conference.  Anyways, I love y'all!

Hope everyone is doing well!

Hard Work and Perseverance...

Hey Momma,

So exciting news, hard work and perseverance had payed off.  We have a baptism coming up on the 8th of April.  There was a part member family I have been trying to get up with since I first got here and right before I leave the stars aligned and now their son is getting baptized and the mom will follow shortly, hopefully.  We also have some other really great people who we have been working with, Joe, we found him while he was out checking the mail.  His wife was a Mormon before she passed away.  While they were together he was meeting with missionaries and working towards baptism, but he moved and didn't have contact with the missionaries for 8 years until we found him.  It seems that the Lord expects me to give my all to the last second, trial after trial, right until I go and then I see the miracles; although, I'm sure that's how it works with a lot of people.  It is the pattern set in the scriptures.

I heard UNC won!  I was so excited after serving in Chapel Hill I converted to being a UNC fan.  I love the cream cheese and chive crackers in the box, the snack food was heaven sent. haha not surprised to hear Sarah got another sunburn, Matt and Lauren are the tanners and me and her are the white ones, it's just how it goes.  Glad to hear everyone is doing well.

My new companion is Elder Qiao, he is from main land China and has been out for about 4 months so I will be helping him learn English, I will be staying in the zone; the new area I'm going to is Sanford!  Another small town similar to Pembroke, but a lot less violent.

Love ya!

Found a new investigator...

Hey Momma!

So things went alright this week, we had an actual good conversation with a JW, that never happens!  Learned a lot about their faith and it is the closest thing to being a Mormon without being a Mormon that I've seen in all the religions out here.  We found a great new investigator, james oxen dine, he had really good question and who qualifies a s a king and ruler as mentioned in D&C 1:23.  But, the biggest struggle we face here is getting the second appointment to not fall through.

I will be mailing my back pack back and also the Christmas hearts will be inside it (the tree was killed in action).  Hope all goes well, and as far as the package, hmmmmm, surprise me, it's always better that way!
